The San Diego Community Youth Court (CYC) was a community-based diversion program for youth participants referred by the San Diego Police Department, City Schools, and San Diego County Probation. When a youth made contact with an officer of the San Diego Police Department for an offense, they were referred by the officer to the program. If the youth participant met all the requirements, they appeared before a panel of volunteer community representatives who will serve as a liaison for the intervention between the participant and the juvenile court system. Each case was heard by a panel that will then assign proper consequences and verifies the participant’s completion accordingly. The programs will hold the participant accountable for their actions, and through the educational component, they have a better understanding of the impact of their choices. Furthermore, they are provided a second chance with no conviction on their record.
YAB was created by the District Attorney‛s Office in 2008 to create a safe space for students to discuss and increase awareness about youth issues in the local community. With adult support and guidance, students have produced impactful campaigns that have earned two National Association of County Achievement Awards, a regional Emmy Award, and the inaugural Diversity Youth Leadership Award from the City of San Diego Human Relations Commission.
