For the first time, the San Diego Office of the District Attorney took the highly successful Citizens Academy on the road
to educate and inspire the citizens of East County. District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis and Assistant District Attorney
Jesse Rodriguez kicked off the event at the Ronald Reagan Community Center and were joined by El Cajon Mayor Mark Lewis
and Police Chief Cliff Diamond.
Some of the highlights of the day long, criminal justice event included in-depth information on the criminal lifestyle,
documentation and prosecution of San Diego's most notorious gangs. Two of the DA's top investigators shared how the
150-person Bureau of Investigation staff works with prosecutors to track down witnesses and gather evidence for trial.
Nearly 100 East County residents were also given a glimpse at how the DA's Narcotics Division prosecutes some of East
County's high profile drug cases. The DA's ICAC Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Director, DDA Laura Gunn,
revealed investigative techniques used to catch online child predators and what parents can do to protect their children.
The afternoon line up included the office's top prosecutors in the areas of Sex Crimes, Domestic Violence and Cold Case
Homicide. San Diego is extremely fortunate to have these nationally recognized experts on staff to share their knowledge
and insight with the citizens of our community.
The North County Citizens Academy was held on August 2, 2007. This was a free one-day course open to the public, demystifying the criminal justice system and exposing the inner workings of the District Attorney's Office. |
